TLDR; if you want your vocabulary to be clear, get this gem.I love this book for I love the English language (which is not my mother tongue) and I want to be as precise as possible while expressing my thoughts. In the tough slog of acquiring the English vocabulary I always write my own definitions into my personal dictionary by composing them from several sources, checking the usage, etymology, etc.And one of the hardest thing is to discern synonyms correctly. For example, can you clearly distinguish between these ones: consider/count/deem/reckon/regard; or inherent/essential/innate/intrinsic; or rebuke/admonish/censure/reprimand/reproach/reprove; or incite/arouse/exhort/forment/instigate/provoke/rouse/stir up?I can't, that's why I bought the book (and I like the readability of the book's syle as well).
Even if you consider yourself to have a strong command of English, I think you'll be able to find something of value in Choose the Right Word: Second Edition.I was acquainted with all of the words in the book already. However, before reading this I would have been hard-pressed to explain the distinctions between words such as duplicate, congruent, exact, identical, and true (pages 126-127).If you are hoping to deepen your understanding, then this is the book for you. It would also be an ideal reference work for ESL (English as a Second Language) learners. If you are planning to learn new words and increase your vocabulary, you may want to look elsewhere.
Very well organized and cross referenced. At the price, I was apprehensive that this might turn out to be a waste of money. I am pleased that I have now a more nuanced choice of words. The search is easy.
This book is superb. When writing to be understood, as intended, requires good word choice. This book gives one the opportunity for many options.
This title is exactly what I wanted. I was given a hardcover copy in 1969 and have used it endlessly since. At that time I had a severe stutter and my wonderful Mum said "If you can't say a word then don't - choose another". So she provided this book for me, which would have been expensive on their small budget. As a result I have developed a love of words and pride in knowing and choosing just the right word for what I want so say. If I'm not sure - then I know where to go - "Choose the Right Word".
Absolutely superb, for a used book, is how I would rate the condition of the book. As for the content, it is what it is. Some of the words are somewhat antiquated, but when one is stuck for specificity during composition, I can think of no better book. I only wish I could get the book in digital format, with a search facility.
