Après avoir servi pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il s''engage dans une brillante carrière universitaire à Oxford et devient l''un des plus grands philologues de son temps. Mais il est reconnu avant tout pour son extraordinaire oeuvre de fiction : BILBO LE HOBBIT (1937), LE SEIGNEUR DES ANNEAUX (1954-1955) et LE SILMARILLION (1977), ainsi que les textes inachevés rassemblés dans L''HISTOIRE DE LA TERRE DU MILIEU. Il s''éteint à l''âge de 81 ans le 2 septembre 1973.
